Opposing carbon tax

InfluenceMap Comment:

Opposing carbon tax in the US (Washington Post, November 2012)

Extract from Source:

The American Petroleum Institute (API) opposes a carbon tax. “Anytime we look at an energy issue, be it a tax or regulatory issue, we ask what does it do to promote or inhibit energy production and what is the impact on the American people,” said Jack Gerard, API president. “Clearly, it would increase costs to the American public. Is that what he [President Obama] wants to do? I would think not.”

Unclear position on carbon tax

InfluenceMap Comment:

Evidence suggests not supporting a carbon tax - continuing to not back carbon tax proposals despite support from certain members whilst promoting voluntary emission reductions (Engineering and Technology, January 2019)

Extract from Source:

Top lobbying organisation for the US oil and gas industry, the American Petroleum Institute (API), says it does not take a position on forming a carbon tax, which some environmentalists, politicians in both parties and petroleum companies say would harness the power of capitalism to reduce emissions. Backing voluntary efforts to reduce emissions, Mike Sommers, the head of API, told reporters in a conference call that the US can boost oil and gas and cut emissions at the same time.
