South Australia Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) has shown moderate support for action on climate change, particularly around the incorporation of renewables into the energy mix. However, SACOME has broadly been unsupportive of policy measures aimed at emissions reductions.

SACOME appears to support GHG emissions reductions but has not taken a position on 1.5°C or net zero targets in line with IPCC science. SACOME has also advocated a national energy and climate policy, although it has qualified this by stating it should set up market-based solutions and it should not affect trade competitiveness.

However, SACOME appears to have been negatively engaged on emissions reduction policies. In 2017, SACOME supported the Safeguard Mechanism but advocated weaker baseline thresholds to protect trade competitiveness. In 2018, it supported the implementation of the National Energy Guarantee but advocated the exemption of EITE industries and flexible compliance options to weaken its ambition. In 2020, SACOME opposed the inclusion of greenhouse gas emissions requirements in the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

SACOME appears to have a mixed position on the transition of the energy mix. In 2019, SACOME showed support for the transition of energy mix with support for measures to improve the integration of renewables such as battery storage and solar panel recycling schemes. In 2020, SACOME supported the development of renewable energy zones. However, the organization has also supported a continued role for oil and gas in the energy mix, such as the drilling of the Great Australian Bight in November 2019

SACOME lacks a dedicated disclosure of its corporate membership, with only a limited number of sponsoring members accessible on its website.
