Climate Lobbying Overview: Eurelectric appears to be actively lobbying EU energy and climate change policy and has become increasingly positive on a number of regulatory strands over recent years.

Top-line Messaging on Climate Policy: The organization supports IPCC demanded emissions reductions and in 2020 Eurelectric's Secretary-General endorsed the European Climate Law to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Engagement with Climate-Related Regulations: Eurelectric supports the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and, in 2020 in comments on several EU Commission consultations, has advocated for reforms to make the scheme more effective, such as supporting the extension of the ETS to more sectors, arguing that the Linear Reduction Factor should be raised and suggesting that the removal of free allowances should be an option for Member States. In its E-Invest report released in 2019, Eurelectric. has stated support for the European Clean Energy Package to “deliver on investments in renewables”. The organization has often argued for technology-neutral policies, for example in in 2017 in a letter to the EU Energy Council, and in 2020 commenting on the Green Deal relating to using the EU ETS for emissions reductions. However, in 2020 Eurelectric also advocated to policymakers to implement ambitious renewable energy legislation in feedback on the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive.

Positioning on Energy Transition:Eurelectric appears to have strongly advocated for the transition of the energy mix, supporting the decarbonization of the energy sector in its 2019 Annual Report, and arguing for the electrification of transport, heating and industry in numerous engagements over recent years, notably in a private letter to the EU Director of the Internal Energy Market in 2020. Additionally, in 2020, Eurelectric has advocated for “stringent emission standards” for the transport sector in response to the EU Roadmap for Sustainable and Smart Mobility and, in a comment on the Energy Taxation Directive in 2020, the organization asked that tax exemptions on aviation and maritime fuels be partially removed to accelerate the transition to cleaner transportation.
