The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is lobbying Canadian climate change policy with mixed support. The Chamber appears to support the Paris Agreement and acknowledges the need for climate action at the federal and international level, although qualifies this support with the stipulation that regulations must not harm national or regional competitiveness. The Canadian Chamber Of Commerce communicated support for a federal Canadian carbon tax in 2015, however has elsewhere stated that carbon pricing policies should involve a ‘review and rollback of redundant regulation’ to reduce their economic cost. Further evidence suggests the Chamber supports both renewable and energy efficiency legislation in Canada, advocating in 2015 for increased subsidies, investment and incentive programs for renewables, and praising Nova Scotia’s energy efficiency programs. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has actively lobbied the Canadian Government to support new oil pipelines and provide financial incentives for coal mining, including a permanent extension and increase to the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit, a fossil fuel subsidy, in 2015. Additionally, the Chamber has engaged policymakers to support the exploitation of Albertan tar sands by opening up Asian markets to unconventional Canadian exports.
