The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) appears to oppose progressive climate policy in Australia while promoting the oil and gas sector through expansive lobbying efforts. The APPEA welcomed the repeal of both the Carbon Tax and the Energy Efficiency Opportunities program, lobbied for the removal of the Renewable Energy Target and advised the Energy White Paper to eschew regulatory intervention in the energy market. Its support for the development of the Safeguard Mechanism, a baseline and credit emissions trading scheme, appears to depend on assurance that Australian industry will not incur a global disadvantage. APPEA also appears to strongly support conventional & unconventional oil and gas, consulting the government in 2016 to expand shale gas production. APPEA have continually emphasized the enormous economic benefit of the industry and argued for the long-term use of oil and gas in the energy mix.
