The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) appears to be lobbying against many strands of climate change policy in the US. AISI's 2016 Public Policy Agenda set out a mixed position on the UN Climate Treaty, suggesting that the treaty did not go far enough to apply 'the same level of stringency' across nations, although AISI does not clearly state whether it supports a greater or lesser level of stringency overall. AISI has a history of attempting to block the regulation of GHG emissions, and has opposed the Clean Power Plan (CPP) throughout 2014 and 2015, becoming involved in multiple legal cases against the rule. In its most recent feedback to the EPA in 2016, AISI continued to oppose the CPP and lobbied in support of a bill that would obstruct the new regulations under the Congressional Review Act. In 2015, AISI's spokesperson Brett Smith appears to have opposed cap and trade or carbon tax policies in Canada on the grounds that it would negatively affect the nation’s competitiveness in the global markets. The group’s position on transitioning the energy mix appears to be mixed; whilst the 2015 Public Policy Agenda appears to support policy to help transition the energy mix in the long-term, in the short-term it appears to advocate for energy policy focusing on high GHG emitting sources, including the increased use of unconventional oil and gas production.
