About Us

Introduction

InfluenceMap is an independent UK-based non-profit organization whose goal is to accurately assess, rank and communicate the extent to which corporations are lobbying climate and energy policy worldwide. Corporate influence plays a major role, both positive and negative, in the creation, implementation, and effectiveness of policy - we have therefore created an interactive and open-source scoring table to capture this influence.

To provide balanced rankings, we map and analyze large amounts of data on corporate and trade association lobbying, communications and spending, collected from a wide range of sources, and then we assign those organizations with a grade — ranging from an A+ to an F. In addition to our on-going, dynamic rankings, we also issue periodic reports on a range of industries, associations and public policy topics. Our platform, including our data and our underlying methodology, is open to inspection, and it is freely available for use. Today, InfluenceMap data is being used by investors, policy makers, campaigners, the media and the corporate sector itself.

Our Mission

InfluenceMap is driven by a desire to make the processes corporations and trade associations use to lobby policy and regulations more transparent. We provide our stakeholders with an online tool to access information on this topic, supporting key engagers in their interactions with companies and corporate representatives. We point to and support the recommendations of a key report on corporate engagement with climate policy from three UN agencies entitled Caring for Climate. It states that corporations be transparent, align their political influences (internally and externally), support climate legislation, and to stop obstructing it.

Our Approach

  • We bring together a range of reliable and clearly referenced data sources from which evidence of corporate influence on climate policy can be assessed.

  • Our organization focuses on data aggregation, analysis and original research. We rely on the generous donation of time by our expert advisors in areas such as climate policy, corporate communications and sustainable investment.

  • Recognizing the need for current and accurate information, InfluenceMap's open-source scoring table is consistently updated, and the scores are adjusted accordingly.

  • We intend to evolve our process based on feedback from stakeholders. We would be delighted if our platform could be applied to other areas of policy and legislation.

  • Our funding is provided by individuals and organizations with an interest in our area of focus. We ensure there is no conflict of interest between our funding sources and the organizations we assess.

Dylan Tanner

Dylan Tanner

Executive Director and Co-Founder

Prior to founding InfluenceMap, Dylan established www.ekobai.com, an online marketplace for sustainable suppliers with over 75,000 members from around the world. Prior to this Dylan established a market-leading environmental consultancy in Tokyo which is now ERM Japan. While he grew up in Japan he is currently living in London. He holds a MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Kings College London.

Thomas O'Neill

Research Director and Co-Founder

Thomas is Research Director and Co-Founder of InfluenceMap. He is interested in the development of evidence-based climate change legislation and has been researching corporate influence over such policy for 5 years. He has worked internationally in Canada and Germany, including with his former employer CDP. Thomas has a degree in Politics and an MSc in International Security and Global Governance from Birkbeck, University of London.

Chris Hurst

Chris Hurst

Technical Manager

Chris is a system architect and developer based in the Scottish Borders. He holds a BA in Economic and Social History from the University of Hull. Since 2000 his focus has been on web based systems for business, charities and campaigning organisations, most recently the multifaith climate movement OurVoices.net. He is the co-author of the Evoke-Grace web application system. He is also film maker, exponent of early photographic processes and microgeographer.

Az has over 30 years' design and creative direction experience working across various sectors. Clients including Channel 4, the BBC, the Department of Education and Skills, Pearson Education as well as the charity Shelter. Most recently, he has been working as a design consultant at the V&A Museum, designing and producing various innovative digital products and an award-winning online mapping solution . Other awards Az has won include two interactive BAFTAs, multiple British Interactive Multimedia awards and he has also been shortlisted for the RTS awards.

Catherine holds a Masters in International Political Economy from King’s College, London. She has a range of communications experience both from working in Brussels for a major European trade association and a development related NGO based in London. She has also worked in UK public policy for an organisation that runs All-Party Parliamentary Groups and research commissions.

Originally a philosophy graduate from the University of Manchester, Ed holds a Masters with distinction from the London School of Economics where his focus was corporate involvement in social justice. Ed has various professional research experience and at InfluenceMap works on analyzing and scoring corporate communications, whilst also helping to develop new methodologies to expand InfluenceMap's core analysis into new areas.

Deborah has worked for the private sector, nongovernmental organizations and the Department of Cultural Affairs in New York City in research and communication roles. She was born in Italy and educated in the US, France, Italy and UK. She holds two BAs- one in International Relations and another in Philosophy, as well as an MA in International Studies and Diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Ben has a background working in multiple thinktank roles, conducting public policy research and organising events in and around parliament. His research interests include US climate change policy and post-Brexit energy policy. Ben holds a first-class BA in Politics and International Relations from York University.

Gretchen Goldman

Union of Concerned Scientists

As a lead analyst at the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists, Gretchen Goldman researches how science is used and misused in public policy. She is an author of many UCS reports on this theme, with topics ranging from government transparency, access to scientific information, hydraulic fracturing, business response to climate change, sugar and health policy. Gretchen works with InfluenceMap on the development of our assessment methodology. She holds a PhD and MSc in Environmental Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a BSc in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University.

Ben Fagan-Watson

Ben Fagan-Watson

University of Westminster

Since July 2009, Ben Fagan-Watson has worked as a research fellow in the Environment Group, Policy Studies Institute, at the University of Westminster. In March 2015, Ben completed a study entitled Lobbying by Trade Associations on EU Climate Policy. He is currently co-ordinating a Rapid Evidence Assessment for Defra, assessing the impact and implementation of complex environmental policies on complex systems. He is interested in exploring how the investment community can drive reductions in corporate demand for energy and materials, and in the influence of large multi-national corporations on climate policy. Ben holds a first-class BA in Historical Studies from the University of Bristol.

Tessa Tennant has devoted her career to innovation in financial services for sustainability. She co-founded the UK's first green equity investment fund in 1988, now called the Jupiter Ecology Fund. She co-founded The Ice Organisation, creating MyIce.com, an environmental rewards programme. She now serves as the organization's non-executive President. Tessa has co-founded several climate initiatives, such as ASrIA in Hong Kong and CDP in the United Kingdom, and more recently Our Voices. She has served on many fund, company and not-for-profit boards.

Jules is a founding Partner at Jericho Chambers, convener of the Real Economy Lab, a Trustee of the think-tank nef (the New Economics Foundation), an Associate of The Futures Company, a Practitioner of Happiness Works, a member of the B Team advisory board, a member of the Steering Group of Economy for Common Good and a Director of the Happy City movement. He has authored a number of things specifically on corporate lobbying including the UN standards on Responsible Engagement.

Paul is Executive Chairman of CDP which he founded in 2000 with an ambition of creating a global economic system that operates within sustainable environmental boundaries and prevents dangerous climate change. Paul previously founded Rufus Leonard Corporate Communications and EyeNetwork, the largest videoconference service in Europe. He served as a member of the Environmental Research Group of the UK Faculty and Institute of Actuaries. Paul has authored various publications, including Beautiful Corporations.

Relevance for Investors

Why policy engagement by companies is important for investors

Developments like the creation by the Financial Stability Board in 2016 of the task force on climate risk highlight the growing awareness of the importance of climate issues to investment portfolios. Investment managers and owners increasingly want to know precisely how the companies they are invested in perform on a range of climate-related metrics. Corporate behaviour towards climate policy and regulation represents an important part of this and as climate regulations progress and get stricter, this aspect of corporate behaviour will come under increasing scrutiny. The VW scandal, for example, has revealed a disregard for regulatory compliance within a company towards environmental and climate regulations resulting in significant financial loss for shareholders.

Why our metric is unique

InfluenceMap has developed a unique metric to assess objectively whether a company is supportive, obstructive or uninvolved with climate regulations. These metrics and the evidence that supports them offer a measure of the corporate culture towards climate policy and climate risk in general. Unlike physical climate performance metrics (like measures of carbon emissions) the InfluenceMap metric measures corporate behaviour and is therefore an indicator of future direction of the company.

How investors can use our metrics and analysis

Strategies and motivations for managing climate risk will vary across the investment spectrum. For example the $800 billion Norway Pension Fund can exclude or place on watch lists companies that present unacceptable levels of greenhouse gas emissions in new 2016 investment criteria driven by its Ethics Council and which allow for inclusion of climate lobbying as a criteria. CaLPERS adopts a risk based approach arguing climate issues present regulatory, physical and reputational risk to invested companies. Some asset managers may offer clients portfolios divested of fossil fuels, such as Walden Asset Management.

InfluenceMap's metrics can assist investors with a variety of such strategies and tactics available to them to manage climate risk.

  • Portfolio management - actively excluding or including companies based on climate risk factors. Within a sector, our metrics advise investors on the companies that are most and least supportive of progressive climate regulations. This is an indicator of readiness for a world with strong and enforced climate regulations. This can be a critical metric in sectors like utilities and automotive, when a sudden shift in technology or regulations could leave huge amounts of capital equipment on the balance sheet "stranded" (e.g. coal burning power plants, internal combustion engine plants).

  • Active engagement - a variety of tactics, from cordial discussions through to shareholder resolutions and board replacements, exist for shareholders to exert their ownership rights on management of companies they wish to retain shares of. Our metrics are backed by evidence of corporate behavior and actions (e.g. patterns of CEO messaging, persistent memberships in climate obstructing groups). Depending on which company is being engaged, we can back up investor tactics with the most important issues and "asks" when it comes to climate risk.

  • Sector exclusion/inclusion - for example, the divest-invest movement. In the energy sector there are very few "pure plays" among large-cap stocks so a sector exclusion/inclusion strategy based on specific fuel types may require additional metrics to determine the "shades of grey" in terms of which are closer in thinking to the low carbon transition than others. We have detected a range of patterns of behaviour towards climate policy, for example, in the fossil fuel sector - indicating some players are planning this energy transition transition sooner than others. We feel measuring corporate attitudes towards future climate policy is a far more indicative metric of true management thinking on this topic than others.
